Types of engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu has several hundred engineering colleges. They fall into three groups, and the group decides how you get a seat and what you pay.
- Government and government-aided colleges, including Anna University campuses: seats are filled through TNEA counselling, and fees are the lowest in the state.
- Self-financing colleges affiliated to Anna University: most seats are also filled through TNEA counselling, with the rest under management quota.
- Deemed and private universities: they run their own admissions through their own entrance exam, JEE Main or 12th marks, and set their own fees. The 25 institutions compared on this page are in this group.
How B.Tech admission works in Tamil Nadu
TNEA (Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions) has no entrance exam: your rank is based on your 12th marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and you choose colleges and branches during online counselling.
Deemed universities admit students separately. VIT uses VITEEE, SRM uses SRMJEEE and Amrita uses AEEE; others take JEE Main scores or 12th marks. Many students apply to TNEA and two or three university exams to keep their options open.
How to choose the right engineering college
- Branch first: check that the college offers the branch you want, such as CSE or AI and Data Science, and its fee for that branch.
- Total cost: add hostel and mess fees to the tuition fee for all four years.
- Placements: compare the median package, not only the highest package.
- Rankings and approvals: look at the NIRF rank, NAAC grade and AICTE approval.
- Location: consider distance from home, city living costs and internship opportunities.
